Your retired athlete has been training for their racing career from the moment they are born. The instinct to run, play and chase is integral to their DNA make up. It’s been bred into them for hundreds of years.
So, what happens when everything they know is no longer part of their job? Depending on the individual personality of each Greyhound, the skills they know don’t always transfer to your household. Past requirements of lead walking from the kennels to the boxes may have allowed them to pull and be excited to be “having a run”. Nothing wrong with that, but the same “fun, excited, pull” will not work in a quiet suburb street café next to a busy road.
A previous life of being the centre of attention and having free reign to run/walk and be where they like, may be dangerous in domestic kitchen with hot pots and pans ready to spill over.
Some Greys will transition seamlessly into a home, like they haven’t known any other way of life. Other personalities need a little help. Obedience training can come in lots of different forms and levels of new training.
Meet Cherry. Cherry is a greyhound that has learned to become a serious agility competition champion. Cherry is an example that the Greyhound breed is capable of any type of complex training.

But this is to top end of the scale and may be a little more than you are looking for. Your basic goal’s may include.
- The garbage bin is not a snack cupboard.
- No, the toilet water does not taste better.
- Bench tops are for human things, and not your paws or nose.
- Urinating and marking are not OK inside the house.
- It’s OK to sit on a bed and not move when humans are walking around.
- The kitchen can be a safety Hazzard and dogs are not allowed.
- Walking can be relaxing and fun, rather choking against a lead.
- The vacuum is not the enemy and out to get you.
Finding the right professional partner to learn new skills can be challenging and we recommend that you have a clear outcome’s that you want to achieve.
We have the following suggestions that you may want to consider. These three trainers are well known to Retired Greys and each of them have a unique and different way to help.
